Our clients wanted to create a stronger entry point for their California Mission style home in Orinda. Characteristic thick exterior walls mimicking adobe, combined with exposed, hand-hewn timber framing, and a Spanish tile roof were excellent design elements upon which to build.
As we began working together developing sketches for a delightful entry path, we discovered a problem in another part of the home. The interior enclosed patio, used as a living space, lacked proper infrastructure and was extremely humid, causing serious condensation and moisture concerns.
The solution was a rebuild of this area, with a new design, over the same footprint. At the same time, we made a stronger entry point by adding a counterposed roofline. The newly designed interior space incorporated Southwest aesthetics with a Kiva fireplace and Banco seating – a perfect complement with the Mission style sense of space.
